What's Up at the Cedar Valley Humane Society

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Valley Humane Society has become the subject of controversy. The organization's board fired two long-time co-directors and about a half-dozen other staff members back in September. Allegations continue to swirl around those firings and the manner in which the shelter currently operates. Over the past two months, I have been trying to sort through paperwork, statements and witness accounts. Everyone involved has the same goal in mind' safe and happy animals. However, the former employees of the shelter insist they're worried about the welfare of the animals. They say the shelter was running well when they got fired, and now the current leadership is unnecessarily euthanizing animals. Board President Bernie Lettington says those accusations simply aren't true. "There weren't a lot of documented procedures and protocols in place to ensure all the cleaning and care and feeding of the animals at a level it really should have been at by good shelter practices," Lettington said. "The place was clean. People would walk in pleasantly surprised thinking they were walking into a pound and they actually a friendly place and felt welcome," said former co-director Susan Manson. Tonight on the KCRG-TV9 News at 10, we'll take an in-depth look at what's going on at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. We'll hear from all sides of the issue and then present even more information right here on KCRG.com.
