IOWA CITY - In Iowa City, three council seats were up for grabs. In the at large race, Susan Mims and Terry Dickens easily took the two open seats, beating out Jeff Shipley and Dan Tallon. In District B, Connie Champion with 52% will keep her seat, beating out challenger Mark McCallum. Earlier on election day, Johnson County auditor Tom Slockett said that the voter turnout in Iowa City was at an all-time low. Many of the elections in Johnson County were for city council seats and unopposed mayoral races. All of the City Council candidates actually gathered at the Blackstone Restaurant on the city's east side to take in the results on television. Susan Mims and Terry Dickens easily captured the at-large seats with Connie Champion returning for a 4th term in on the council. She admitted she was surprised. "I didn't expect to win. I really didn't. I thought with the low voter turnout it would be an anti-council vote. I'm glad I won," said Champion. "It's been a lot of fun. I'm just really looking forward to putting my abilities and talents to work for the city and good things will come from that," Mims Said. The final voter turnout numbers for Iowa City - 10% of registered voters cast ballots. That was down sharply from two years ago, when voting turnout was in the 33% range.
